Hot Springs

I did a bit more work on this. I improved the railing to the left of the couple, worked on the profile of the guy (right shoulder) and fluffed up the clouds of steam.

Haymakers

Based on Haymakers by Edward Seago. It was recently sold at Sotherby's and an advert showing the painting appeared in a magazine. I was immediately attracted to the sky which is beautiful in the original. I also realise that the original is more open with extra sky and fields on the left. Click here

The foreground proved difficult to draw as did the hay on the cart.

Claudette

Claudette is the teacher overseeing all the students who exhibited. Examples of some of their work are shown in the postings below. With Claudette is Elad Arad and one of his paintings. Elad has been a student with Claudette for 11 years.

Omer exhibition July 4-5, 2008

My first exhibition - it's thrilling to watch (and hear) people as they look at your work.

Negev

This is inspired by the Negev desert where Omer is based. Not quite my out-the-frontdoor view but certainly 5km up the road. And ok I exaggerated the hills and yes it is never this green even after the rains but hey, this is art.

Collective mobile

The teacher asked each of us to paint an abstract on two sides of a cardboard square. These will be tied together and hung to form a class-collective mobile.

Tulip Time

The link above is to the original - a superb photo on Flickr.

Claudette, the art teacher, likes the idea of composing such paintings from photos etc while my other teacher, Yael, wants us to draw from the gut. The approach above teaches technique but for Yael this is a demostration of a skill, not art.

Ponderings

Yael's class: Like the very first cello player painting, this started off with lines on a canvas drawn with closed eyes. Drawing the waterfall proved a particular challenge.

Liam Neeson

A portrait inspired by the actor's advert promoting a hotel chain. Click here.

Ganai Omer

The result of the outdoor drawing exercise (See May 1st posting) of Ganai Omer (Omer Gardens) - a residence for retired folks and some 10 minutes walk from where I live.

Portrait

Moonlight

Yael told us to use tissue paper to flesh out a painting in 3D. In the end I used some wooden strips which I stuck on the painting to create the fence.

Profile

We practised how to do a face profile using plasticine. Once we'd done that we were told to draw profiles. This was my first attempt.

Mobile Kiddush

Another exercise using charcoal to draw objects. I chose the traditional and the new.

George Bernard Shaw

This is a charcoal drawing of a photo of a bust of George Bernard Shaw. Not surprisingly, people in the class saw it more as Theodor Herzl

Perfume Lady

This is what the drawing of the perfume model became after the teacher, Yael, changed it.

Family

This is the final version of an image I drew in January. The teacher wanted the image in back and white pen including the background.

Lakeside

This is a painting of a photograph. It took over two months to finish.

Narciso Rodriguez

A charcoal portrait - a drawing of a model posing for a scent advert. The printed version of the model photo I drew is darker than the one shown.

Close-up of the face: work in progress

A darker left side seems to work better

Painting black and white photos

Yael told us to pick a black and white photo that appealed from a heap of images and paint it using colours. And to be as adventurous as possible with the colour scheme. I liked that the image had a lot of sky and I decided to add a couple of mountains and the birds of course.
